Heating Instructions: Silly Yaks Gluten Free Pie & Roll Range

General Information

Silly Yaks 100% wheat free, 100% gluten free pies and rolls are quite durable products, requiring little special handling in order to achieve excellent results.  Like all pastry products, they are at their best when heated in an oven, which keeps the surface of the pie dry and gives the pastry a crisp, clean mouth feel.  We recognize, however, that this is not always possible, so instructions for heating the pies in a microwave oven have also been provided.

In many (if not most) cases, a Silly Yaks gluten free pie or roll will have been stored in the freezer prior to eating.  Therefore instructions for defrosting the product either in the microwave or naturally are also provided.

Defrosting Products in the Microwave

To defrost a frozen Silly Yaks gluten free pie or roll in the microwave, follow these simple steps:

1. Remove the product from its plastic packaging and aluminium pie foil (if it is a pie).  Discard all packaging.
2. Place the product on a microwave safe tray or plate.
3. If your microwave has an automatic “Defrost” setting, use this setting, being careful to enter the appropriate weight of the product(s).
4. If you wish to defrost manually, heat the product on half power for approximately three minutes.  It should now be defrosted.

Defrosting Products in the Refrigerator

To defrost a Silly Yaks gluten free pie or roll in the refrigerator:

1. Remove the product from its plastic packaging and aluminium pie foil (if it is a pie).  Discard all packaging.
2. Place the product in a closed container, to ensure that it doesn’t dry out, and place in the refrigerator.
3. Leave the product to defrost for approximately twelve hours.

Note that it is no longer recommended to allow food to defrost on the bench at room temperature, due to the variations in temperature and the fact that the surface of the food will quite rapidly reach the temperature danger zone, which facilitates optimal bacterial growth.

Heating Products in the Microwave

To heat a defrosted Silly Yaks gluten free pie or roll in the microwave oven, simply microwave on high power for approximately two minutes, or until the product is heated through.  When removing the product from the microwave and eating, exercise caution, as the product may be very hot!

Like wheat pastry, Silly Yaks gluten free pastry is not at its best when heated in the microwave.  In order to bring back some of the crunchy mouth feel that is our pastry at its best, pop your microwaved pie or roll under the grill for about sixty seconds once you’ve heated it.  Your palate will feel the difference!

Heating Products in the Oven

To heat a defrosted Silly Yaks gluten free pie or roll in a conventional oven:

1. Preheat your oven to 180 degrees Celsius.
2. If you have not already done so, remove the product from all packaging materials and discard them.
3. Place the product on an oven proof plate or tray.
4. Bake the pie in the middle of the oven for approximately 20-25 minutes, or until it is heated through.  If using a convection or fan-forced oven the heating time will be shorter than if using a conventional (not fan-forced) oven.

When removing the product from the oven and eating, exercise caution, as the product may be very hot!

Notes

1. Please note that the plastic material in which the products are packed is not heat resistant.  Therefore a Silly Yaks gluten free pie or roll should under no circumstances be heated in either the microwave or the conventional oven in its packaging.  Always remove the product from the plastic packaging and for best results also remove it from the pie foil (if it is a pie).

2. Note that these instructions are for a 600W microwave.  Heating times should be varied up or down depending on whether you are using a microwave which is less or more powerful than 600W respectively.
