Symptoms of Coeliac Disease

One of the difficulties with the identification and diagnosis of coeliac disease is that it does not have a characteristic set of defined symptoms. People with coeliac disease may exhibit no symptoms at all or may show a wide variety of symptoms including the following:

  • Bloating, flatulence and wind;
  • Vomiting;
  • Diarrhoea;
  • Joint swelling;
  • Tiredness;
  • Weakness;
  • Nutrient deficiencies, including osteoporosis;
  • Fluctuations in weight, including difficulty in gaining or losing weight;
  • Mood issues, including irritability or depression.

Because of the highly variable symptoms experienced by coeliac disease sufferers, diagnosis is often delayed and misdiagnosis is common. Many people who are eventually diagnosed with coeliac disease are initially given the catch-all diagnosis of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). For this reason, if you think that you have symptoms consistent with coeliac disease or if you are experiencing gut or stomach problems which seem to be related to eating wheat or gluten, it may be advisable for you to consult your doctor about having the coeliac blood test.
