We know that there are people who would like to brew their own gluten free beer. There have been two major problems with doing this:

  • Firstly, gluten free malt. From now, you can buy sorghum malt from Grain and Grape or you can malt it your self.
  • Comprehensive instructions on brewing gluten free beer. There are some instructions on the internet, but these leave out some important details. We have prepared instructions on both malting gluten free grains and brewing gluten free beer, to access these click here.
The malted sorghum is available through one of the homebrew shops in Melbourne (Grain and Grape) which can process Australia wide internet and phone orders. The sorghum malt is sold in sealed 2.5kg bags. You will need to crush it yourself, as a malt mill at a homebrew shop will be contaminated by barely malt.

Some recipies and known safe ingredients are also given.

Please understsnd that brewing gluten free beer is not be as easy as brewing kit beer. With these kits you start of with a can of extract, dilute it, add sugar etc, and then ferment it. To brew gluten free beer, you start with gluten free malt, the malt has to be crushed, this is added to water, heated and kept at a number of different temperatures to convert the starches in the malt to sugars, then filtered, boiled with hops, and then fermented.
